Description
This virtual panel engages with AAG’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Task Force’s Career and Research Mentors initiative launched in August 2020. The panel will explore the following topics:
(1) Broad introduction: Why look at careers outside of academia?
- Statistical trends around graduating doctoral candidates, available tenure-track jobs, etc.;
- Seeking a culture of support, meaning, life-work balance, etc.;
- Seeking opportunities to conduct applied research and have a more immediate impact on societal change via practical solutions;
(2) Specific opportunities and challenges PhDs in geography and adjacent disciplines experience in non-academic careers;
(3) Strategies and innovations employed to recruit and draw interest to non-academic career pathways;
(4) Strengthen the understanding of the value of the skills, toolkit, and networks developed from a research-based PhD program;
(5) Identify hiring trends across sectors;
(6) Navigating conversations with academic mentors on pursuing a non-academic career, while encouraging the creation of space for additional mentorship of non-academic professionals;
(7) How to obtain experience and knowledge to address gaps in the technical skills developed from the PhD process to prepare for non-academic careers.
