Description
This session will report the results of a large-scale quantitative analysis of restricted-use data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Geography Assessment. The session engages the theme of Geographies of Access by empirically exploring disparities in geography achievement at the 8th-grade level over a quarter century (1994-2018).
A predictive model was developed using NAEP data to estimate the achievement effects (net correlations) of student background characteristics (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, parental education) and school contextual attributes (e.g., urbanicity, region, school composition). This initial model will serve as the foundation for further studies involving NAEP data to address the extent that inequality in outcomes can be explained by inequality in opportunity to learn geography.
Discussants will consider the implications of NAEP research for advancing the objectives of the AAG and other organizations that represent stakeholders in geography and social studies education. Information will also be shared about upcoming workshops and events aimed at building capacity for educational assessment research in geography.
