Abstract
This paper introduces the subject of marriage migration to the debate on transnational ethnic networks. In recent years, there have been a growing number of studies on the transnational ethnic networks and the benefit of remittances to the home countries. However, few if any have specifically focused on marriage migrant women’s networks and remittances. Based on ethnographic research methods, we look at the network-based economic strategies of marriage migrant women and their families in Vietnam and South Korea. First, we discuss how Vietnamese migrant women’s transnational marriage networks coupled with Vietnam’s revised visa policies and rapid development facilitate their and their husbands’ investment in businesses and real estate in Vietnam. Second, we look at how the development of social remittances and financial investment propelled those women and their families in Vietnam to engage in temporary and repeated migrations. Their mobilities in return strengthened and expanded the existing transnational marriage networks. By looking at the evolving process of the transnational marriage networks, we contribute to the understanding of the roles of marriage migration in the migration-development circuit
